Olympic Winter Game Highlight Show

I was impressed by the The Vancouver Olympic Winter Game Highlight Show delivered on the 'Channel 9' yesterday. The show dealt mainly with Australian mogul player 'Dale Begg-Smith' who has missed his back to back gold medal edged out by Canadian 'Alexandre Bilodeau' who now has been first Winter Olympic gold medalist in home soil.

As you may know the mogul competitor's ranking is decided by the judge's scores and Dale Begg-Smith was defeated by just '0.17' point. So someone can get suspicious of the decision thinking the Canadian player might have been given a bit of home advantage. To some extent, this is quite believable especially given that the Canadians have been longing for the first gold medal in home country since 1976 at which the Montreal summer Olympic took place.

The reason that the show was so worth watching is they tried to clear the doubt of the decision people may have born in their mind. Firstly, The expert appeared in the show explained why Dale Begg-Smith got less point than Alexandre Bilodeau showing the video of the performance scene step by step, so that TV audience can easily figure out. The next was Dale Begg-Smith himself telling how his play had been with a mention that it could have been better, quite naturally, trying not to hide his disappointment. The showing up of Alexandre Bilodeau was a really surprising thing to me. I have hardly seen other country's rival player being invited our TV show after defeating our player. He spoke out the delight of his winning and get a congratulation from the TV presenter. I still feel odd of that anyway.

Kim Yun A's figure skating performance is just around corner, and could we see a TV show like this if she doesn't get the gold medal of which every one in my country was so convinced that there is no room for other exceptions. I doubt it.

A DARKER DOMAIN - Val McDermid

이 'Val McDermid'란 작가를 어떻게 처음 알게 되었는 지를 설명하는 것이 우선일 것 같습니다. 일단 이곳 http://pocf.textcube.com/12 에 작가에 대한 간략한 정보가 소개되어 있으니 들렀다 오실 것을 추천 드리구요...(지금도 사실 별로 아는 건 없지만) 정말 아무런 지식도 없을 때 서점 추리소설 섹션을 돌며 이전에 들어보지 못했던 작가의 책은 죄다 앞 뒷장을 훑어보며 대략의 정보를 얻는 즐거움으로 시간을 보낸 적이 여러 번 있었는데, 그때 가장 눈에 띈 이름이 바로 'Val McDermid'였습니다.

다른 작가의 책들에 마치 약방의 감초처럼 촌평으로 이름을 올리고 있는걸 보면서 국내에 있을 땐 들어본 적도 작가라 '도대체 어떤 작가이길래?'하는 생각이 들었습니다. 그러다 'BBC'라디오 웹사이트를 통해 내려 받은 'FOUL PLAY'라는 공개 범죄드라마(?)에 게스트로 출연한 그녀의 목소리를 듣고서는 '아! 이 작가의 책은 무조건 한번은 읽어야겠구나'하는 생각을 했습니다. 굳이 사진을 보지 않더라도 그녀의 신체 사이즈를 짐작하기에 충분하고도 남는 굵은 목소리의 묵직한 저음은 왠지 모르게 작가에 대한 믿음이 가게 만들더군요.

(혹시 저 '공개 범죄드라마'라는 것이 어떤 것인지 궁금해 하실 분들을 위해 간략하게 설명 드리자면...먼저 극을 이끌어가는 사회자가 있습니다. 이 분이 대본도 쓰시구요. 그리고 연기자들이 극마다 조금씩 다르지만 대게는 담당수사관과 세,네명선의 용의자 캐릭터를 각각 맡아 청중들을 상대로 연기를 하게 됩니다. 수사관이 대략의 사건현장 소개를 한 뒤 용의자들이 나와 자신들이 피해자와 어떤 관계이며 범죄시각 무엇을 하고 있었는지...등을 연기하는 식으로요... 그리고 이 연기자들의 연기를 통해 펼쳐지는 가상의 살인사건의 비밀을 게스트로 초대된 2명의 추리소설 작가 가 푸는 겁니다. 중간중간 게스트들이 용의자들에게 한 두 마디 심문할 수 있는 기회도 주어지는데 범인이 일찍 밝혀지는 것을 막기 위해 사회자가 적절한 선에서 그 질문들을 조절하는 역할을 하게 됩니다. 개인적으로 이 라디오 드라마를 들으면서 영국인들의 추리소설에 대한 각별한 애정을 실감할 수 있었습니다.)

그리고 TV 드라마 'WIRE IN THE BLOOD'...그녀의 원작 캐릭터를 바탕으로 한 시리즈물 인데, 여기와서 많은 종류의 범죄드라마를 본건 아니지만 그 드라마들 중 'Midsommer Murders' 다음으로 (비록 한 시즌이긴 하지만) 재미있게 본 드라마였습니다. 제가 느끼기에 영국의 범죄드라마가 미국의 그것과 다른 점은 한 시즌에 많은 편수가 제작되지 않아 전반적으로 작품의 질이 높다는 것과 카메라 테크닉에 공을 들이기 보단 배우들의 연기를 많이 살린다는 것인데 'WIRE IN THE BLOOD'는 카메라 테크닉이랑 연기 모두가 훌륭해서 드라마를 보는 동안 화면에서 뿜어져 나오는 엄청난 힘 앞에 저절로 압도 당할 수 밖에 없었습니다.

이 책 'A DARKER DOMAIN'은 그래서 큰 기대를 갖고 시작하게 되었습니다.

탄광촌 파업을 깨고 도망갔다는 이유로 아버지와 20년 이상을 연락을 끊고 살아온 딸이 죽어가는 자신의 아들을 살리기 위해 'COLD CASE' 담당 수사관 'Karen Pirie'를 찾아와 사라진 아버지를 찾아달라는 부탁을 합니다. 하지만 수사도중, 그녀의 아버지가 파업을 깬 다른 몇 명의 광부와 함께 도망간 것이 아니라 우연히 같은 날짜에 다른 이유로 사라졌다는 것이 드러나면서 진상조사는 미궁에 빠져듭니다.

수수께끼 같은 사건 자체도 그렇지만 캐릭터 묘사도 확실하고 해서(기발한 플롯도 좋아하지만 캐릭터가 뚜렷한 쪽을 더 선호하는 편이라…)초반, 적어도 중반 이후까지는 읽는 이가 빠져들만한 충분한 흡인력을 가지고 있습니다. 하지만 첫 번째 반전이라 할 수 있는 어떤 연결고리가 드러나는 장면 이후부터는 왠지 추진력을 잃어버린 것처럼 보이더군요. 그리고 마지막 반전은 분명 의외이기는 하나 충격적이라기 보단 그냥 덤덤하다고 해야 할까...뭐 그런 느낌이었습니다. 저 모르게 저를 짝사랑했던 오래된 여자친구의 편지를 우연히 누군가로부터 전해 받은 것 같은 기분이라고 하면 정확할까요?

쓰려다 보니 이런 모양새가 됐지만 모자란 작품이라고 말하려는 것이 아니라 기대가 컸던 만큼 조금 아쉽다는 뜻입니다. 사실 초반 부분을 읽으면서 계속 ‘미야베 미유키’ 여사랑 비교를 했었거든요. 아무튼 기회가 되면 그녀의 이전 작품들을 찾아 읽을 계획입니다.

Former cricket star's new girl friend

I sometimes wonder at the way of the Australian face with 'death'. That I can rarely see people, whose family or friend has died recently by an accident or a disaster or disease, crying on TV while they are being interviewed might be a good example. This kind of unemotional attitude over the decease of someone you had always been with may raise some suspicious among the public if you live in Asia, at least Korea I can say, whose people tend to become seriously sentimental when they encounter with acquaintance's death. Not only someone you well know but also the one you have ever met or seen before by any chance.

Today I saw 'Glenn McGrath', who is said to be one of the best cricket player over the past decade and whose wife, Jane McGrath, has died from breast cancer 18 months ago, on TV news. It presented a picture in which he and his might-be new girl friend were sitting together in a restaurant, showing genuine smile.

It would have been definitely issued or possibly went to a controversy if it had happened in my country given that his late wife died from such a disease. Having been a husband of a woman who had always tried to be happy with family hiding the agony from a painful cancer and a well known sports star people have been admiring for a long time, appearing, though it was just a picture, with new female friend in a news would not be something people can smoothly admit. At least it was the case to me and I saw the female TV anchor showing an expression that was somewhere between sweetness and bitterness while other male anchor was delivering the news about Glenn McGrath's new fiance.
