Jiney's Wedding

Mison, Amellie, Jason and me who are all from HTA, where we are studying for a Diploma course together, went to a place called 'Wynnum Manly Leagues Club' to congratulate the Jiney's wedding.

We got there and saw the place and were all surprised by the size of the league club which was way beyond our expectation. It was huge.

The ground Flore was composed of a big bar where some people were watching a horse racing or a cricket game on the big screen TVs that hang on the walls here and there, a couple of gaming rooms that housed a lot of pokies which seemed to be eating away the pocket money from the aged and a terrace where you can have some beer while you are enjoying footy taking place just before your eyes.

The wedding hall was in the second Flore and nobodies there as we arrived except for the groom who greeted us with the normal smile you can get when you first meet a person you don't know very well. We found Jiney's parents inside the hall standing stiffly to meet guests who I assume took a long flight from Korea to see their daughter's second wedding in Australia being followed by the first one held in Korea. We exchanged a short greeting each other which failed to produce an warm atmosphere and took seats arranged for us.

Honestly, I thought the wedding would be boring as the ones of Korean and it turned out to be it is half true. We just sat back and talked to someone we only have met before or at least heard of from someone we know. From time to time, we did clapping for the music from the band called 'That's 60s' whose name is so obvious you don't have to think about too much to guess what their repertoire is. The songs were proved to be not so bad. When we were not doing both of them, the only thing we can do in an extent of normal behaviour was eating.

The best part of the wedding was definitely the special song sung by the groom after his speech which was a bit boring. The performance produced by the groom which I suppose a huge effort might have been needed was something that I would never forget. Even there were some bride's mates who had tears in their eyes as the song took up the big hall as if they are the bride it was aimed at.

Regardless whether I enjoyed the wedding or not, I do hope and believe the marriage will last for hundreds and thousands years to come. Congratulation Jiney and Imre!

GONE - Jonathan Kellerman

잘 모르는 작가의 책을 사려고 고민할 때 주로 쓰는 가늠자중 하나는 그 책이 도중에 포기하지 않을만한 책인가? 하는 것입니다. 책을 이리저리 훑어보다 보면 일종의 느낌 같은 것이 오는데 그게 좋으면 한번 도전해 보는 거고 아니면 그냥 내려놓는 경우가 많은데 이 작품 은 그 좋은 느낌 때문에 읽게 된 책입니다. 많은 부분이 두 주인공 사이의 짧은 대화로 이루어져 있는데다 이외의 문장도 그다지 긴 편이 아니어서 솔직히 말하면 '만만하게'보고 시작한 게 사실입니다. 그리고는 된통 얻어 맞았습니다.^^

한 언어를 배운다는 것이 단순히 말만 배우는 것이 아니라 그 언어를 사용하고 있는 사람들의 문화를 함께 알아가는 것이란걸 몰랐던건 아니자만 새삼 깨달았습니다. 두 세 마디로 이루어진 단순한 대화의 숨겨진 뜻을 찾는 것은 숨은 그림 찾기의 숨은 그림을 찾는 것과는 비교가 안되더군요. 책을 끝내는 게 정말 쉽지 않았지만 어쨌든 좋은 경험이었습니다.

국내에 소개된 적이 있는 작가인진 잘 모르겠지만 영미권에선 나름 독자층을 확보하고 있는 모양인가 봅니다. 작품활동도 꾸준한 것 같고 저번 중고 서적 행사에 갔을 때도 이 작가의 많은 책들이 진열되어 있더라고요.

제대로 읽었다고 말하기 조차 부끄러워 이런걸 써야 하는지도 잘 모르겠지만 여하튼 –제가 알고있다고 생각하는- 앞부분의 내용을 간략히 이야기하자면, 영화배우를 꿈꾸던 두 명의 남녀가 대중의 주목을 얻기 위해 마치 자신들이 유괴되어 처참하게 고문당한 뒤 산속에 버려진 것처럼 꾸민 자작극을 벌입니다. 하지만 수사과정에서 그들의 이야기가 거짓이었음이 드러나고 결국 법의 판결을 기다리게 되는데 그 과정에서 둘은 법원으로부터 정신감정이 필요하다는 명령을 받게 됩니다. 사건은 그렇게 마무리되고 시간이 흐른 뒤 이 책의 주인공인 정신과 의사 ‘Alex Delaware'’는 어느 날 도로 가의 변사체로 발견된 젊은 여성이 바로 자신에게 정신 감정 의뢰를 받으러 왔던 그 여자임을 알게 됩니다. 그리고는 자신의 자문을 얻고 있으며 친구이기도 한 형사 ‘Sturgis’와 함께 수사에 동참하게 됩니다.

어쩌면 실제의 사건 수사의 진행과정은 이 책처럼 수많은 탐문 조사와 목격자 혹은 사건과 관계된 사람들과의 인터뷰의 반복으로 이루어지는 지도 모르겠습니다. 하지만 보는 이의 입장에선 허를 찌르는 반전도 주인공의 번뜩이는 아이디어도 잘 보이지 않는 스토리가 좀 지루했던 것이 사실입니다. 범인 역시 뜻밖의 인물이기는 하나 그 동기가 너무 먼 곳에 있어서인지 마지막 부분의 그 공포감이 직접 피부로 와 닿지는 않더군요.

훌륭하다고는 말하기 힘들지만 그렇다고 기대 이하였다고 하는 건 일단 제대로 읽을 능력을 갖추지 못한 제 탓을 먼저 하고 난 다음에나 할 수 있는 것 같습니다. 기회가 온다면 작가의 다른 책을 읽고나서 제대로 된 평가를 해보고 싶습니다

You like Australia?

More often than not, I wonder what sort of country Australia is, even though it's been nearly two years since I came to this country.

The Australian Open is now halfway undergoing in Melbourne and tonight I watched a Man's quarter final, Nadal vs Murray. It was after the second game of the second set had been finished that the match was interrupted by a fire works booming just around the stadium as a celebration of 'Australia day'. The umpire asked the players whether they wanted to continue to play or have a pause till the fire works to be finished and, under the agreements, the game stopped for a moment.

As you know, The Australian Open is one of the major international tennis tournaments and a lot of attentions are given on every match from not only this country but also the player's. So you might have been surprised how such a big game could be disrupted by a fire works and of course you would blame the promoter for not having prevented that fire works in advance.

However, I would have to say, to some extent, this scene shows an aspect of a country named Australia, most of whose people think they are living in the best country in the planet. They don't seem to much care about what other countries are thinking of them. You like Australia? We would be happy. If you don't, that's too bad.

'Lifeline' book fest

Today, I went to the 'Brisbane convention center' where the 'Lifeline' annual book fest is taking place and I was overwhelmed as I put my step inside the hall. Because it was much more huge than I had expected it would be, it seemed to be a lot bigger than soccer play ground, and millions of books are crammed on the long tables to be picked.

Although, it was just over 9am as I got to there which is normally not the time people in a hurry given that it was weekends, the convetion center was already crowded of the people from every suburbs of the town. Even there were some people getting out of the place with a couple of shopping carts that were full of second hand books.

The scene of great number of people putting the books into their large bags as swiftly as they can made me also hurry to join the endless line before, I thought it would possibly happen, all the books that I was looking for went away.

I spent almost 4 hours weaving through all the tables of paperback section in which I didn't realise the time went so fast and ended up with 17 books which is a lot more than I would've bought. Nevertheless, now I am thinking of visiting the place again because there are still some books that I had hoped could be there but were not and will try once more next time. Anyway I had the happiest day over the last few months.

'AN EXPERT IN MURDER' - Nicola Upson

제가 가장 좋아하는 '아가사 크리스티' 여사의 작품은 <애크로이드 살인사건>입니다. 물론 '트릭'의 경이로움이 그 첫 번째 이유이기는 하지만, 아직도 잊을 수 없는 -범인의 의외성에서 기인한- 결말부분의 공포감은 또 다른 의미에서 큰 이유이기도 합니다. '포와로'의 입에서 흘러나오는 한마디 한마디에 손발이 움찔움찔하고 뒷덜미가 서늘하다 못해 오싹해졌던 그 때의 분위기는 아직까지 그 어떤 추리소설이나 공포영화를 통해서도 다시 느껴본 적이 없었던 것 같습니다.

사건 현장에 있었던 혹은 사건에 관련된 용의자들을 한 자리에 불러다 놓고 탐정이 진행하는 범죄의 재구성을 훔쳐보는 이런 식의 결말은 어찌 보면 독자들에게 단순히 미덕이고 혹은 그저 보너스일 수도 있겠지만, 트릭 자체보다는 그 트릭의 기발함에서 파생되는 음흉하고 공포스러운 분위기를 더 즐겼던 저에게는 종종 사건의 복잡함 때문에 느끼게 되는 자괴감(?)과 더불어 살인사건 사이의 공백에서 오는 지루함을, 기나긴 고행(?)뒤에 얻게 될 짜릿한 결말을 누리기 위해 마땅히 치러야 할 대가로 여기게 만드는 도저히 뿌리칠 수 없는 유혹입니다.

이런 면에서 제가 가장 달가워하지 않는 유형의 작품은 전혀 엉뚱한 곳 또는 엉뚱한 사람에 의해서 사건의 전모가 일종의 선전포고도 없이 순식간에 밝혀지는 그런 책들입니다. 그리고 아쉽게도 ‘An Expert in Murder’ 역시 그런 작품들 중의 하나입니다.

추리소설에는 전혀 어울릴 것 같지 않은 표지 그림에도 불구하고 추리소설이 아니면 생각하긴 힘든 책 제목에 끌려 이 책을 산지가 거의 1년이 다되었지만 그 동안 애써 읽고 싶은 마음을 누르고 영어가 조금 더 늘기를 기다렸던 이유는 ‘아마도’ 이 작품이 ‘본격’일 거라는 기대감 때문이었습니다. 위에서도 말씀 드렸듯이 본격을 좋아하긴 하지만 그 트릭을 쫓아가는 것은 늘 힘들었기에 모자라는 영어로 좋은 작품을 망치는 것이 썩 내키지 않았기 때문입니다.

결국 ‘어떻게’ 보다 ‘왜’라는 쪽에 좀더 기운 결말은 제 지나친 기대와 달리 허탈(?)하게 끝나긴 했어도 –연극무대를 둘러싸고 펼쳐지는- 1930년대의 분위기가 물씬 풍겨나는 시대적 배경은 ‘아가사 크리스티’를 사랑하시는 분들에겐 충분히 어필할 만한 장점이 아닌가 생각합니다. 특히 도입부분을 약간 지난 지점에서, 사건과 관련될 인물들을 한 명 한 명 디테일 하게 묘사하며 독자의 환기를 유도하는 장면은 역시 추리소설이 아니면 찾아보기 힘든 매력인 것 같습니다.

작가의 다음 작품(‘Angel with Two Faces’, 02/2009, UK)이 트릭의 까다로움을 좀더 발전시킨 것이 될지 아니면 –개인적으로 느끼기에- 작가자신의 장점이라고 생각되는 서정적이고 드라마틱한 구성에 더 중점을 두게 될 지는 알 수 없지만, 만약 전자의 경우라면 과거의 향수를 그리워하는 추리소설 독자들에게 거부할 수 없는 유혹이 될 것이 분명합니다.

AVATAR(3D) -James Cameron

Now everyone seems to be talking about the movie 'AVATAR (3D)' with which the director 'James Cameron' has came back after 12 years since the 11 academy awards movie 'Titanic' and so enthusiastically, including me, encourage someone who haven't seen it yet to watch the one. It would be pointless to explain what make people do that to the person who still haven't been to the world of 'AVATAR', to which I might give a title like 'innovation of 3D movie'.

Since around half decade ago, the movie industries in Hollywood, who have believed that the only key to make people get out of the couch with big plasma TV and come to the cinema would be '3D', have been trying to create various kinds of 3D films experimenting variety of CG techniques. Nevertheless, until this movie came out, it was true that people didn't so much care about taking the advantage of '3D' because they didn't feel they need to watch the same movie in 3D paying a lot more than 2D. However, this movie 'AVATAR' is now undoubtedly changing people's several-years-old attitude to the 3D movies.

While the 'AVATAR' has showed the huge potentiality of 3D movies and this will probably lead Hollywood procures to invest great deal of money in 3D part, it may be a premature thought that the movies we will meet in the cinema decade after might all be the '3D's. Anyway, I have no doubt 'AVATAR' will be a monumental movie in 3D film history.
